    Richland Community College - Human Resources Generalist

    The Human Resources Generalist has primary responsibility for several areas in Human Resources, including coordination of the hiring process, performance management, training and development, new hire on-boarding and orientation, and the coordination of benefits for employees.  This position also has accountabilities in various human resources areas, including employee relations, pay, administration of fair employment laws, and policy development and administration.

    This position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field, plus three years of related Human Resources generalist and/or higher education experience.  Experience in the design and delivery of training initiatives is beneficial.  A PHR certification or comparable certifications is preferred.

    This position requires strong interpersonal, analytical, problem solving, and project management skills.  Conflict resolution and mediation skills and experience are required.  Strong organizational skills and attention to detail are necessary.   Knowledge of fair employment laws is preferred.  The incumbent must be able to work effectively as a team member and contributor.

    Job Purpose

    To provide Human Resource guidance to the facility that fosters the creation of a positive work environment by:

        •     Facilitating fair resolutions to employee relation issues

        •     Managing all union interactions 

        •     Developing, recommending and coordinating policies and programs related to Human Resources

        •     Approximately 30% travel

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    1. Employee Relations:  Determines and recommends employee relations practices necessary to establish a positive work environment and promote a sense of fairness and consistency.  Offers guidance and assistance to plant personnel in dealing with day-to-day employee relations’ issues.  Provides accurate and consistent policy interpretation and administration.

    2. Union Involvement:  Acts as company representative in dealing with Union issues.  Builds positive working relationship with Union leadership to facilitate business operations.  Manages and coordinates the grievance process.  Provides plant with interpretation of labor agreement contract language.

    3. Recruiting:  Recruits for all exempt, non-exempt and hourly positions in the facilities.  This includes meeting with hiring supervisors and managers to develop a recruiting strategy, utilization of appropriate recruiting sources, interviewing, reference checks and scheduling pre-employment drug screens and physicals.

    4. Legal Issues:  Acts as company liaison in dealing with federal agencies such as EEOC.  Coordinates presentation of Company’s position to this agency with assistance of VP Human Resources and legal counsel.

    5. Policy Administration:  Recommends and implements personnel policies and procedures.  Maintains employee handbook of policies and procedures.

    6. Benefit Administration:  Manages benefit administration for salaried and hourly benefit plant working with Corporate HR to ensure timely resolution of benefit issues.  Offers guidance to facility employees as needed.

    7. Government Reporting and Record Keeping:  Align action plan to Affirmative Action program to strengthen diversity efforts.

    8. Compensation:  Manages wage administration and annual review process.    

    9. New Hire Orientation:  Develops new hire orientation process.

    10. Organization Development:  Manages performance management process and developmental needs of staff.  Develops, conducts and /or coordinates training programs, which address these developmental needs.

    11. Supervising:  Indirectly supervises employees in the Human Resources Department at the plants.  Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems and compliance with organization’s policies and applicable laws.

    Education/Experience/Skill/Competence Requirements

    Education:

    Bachelor’s Degree.

    Experience:

     

    5 years generalist Human Resources experience at the plant level with a minimum of 5 years HR management experience in a unionized environment.  Must have hands on experience managing labor agreements.  Advanced level of counseling skills and abilities on a wide range of employee-related areas.  Must be able to manage conflict resolutions effectively.

    Position Summary:

    The HR Generalist is responsible for leading the salaried recruiting process, overseeing the hourly recruiting process, working through adverse backgrounds, completing unemployment claims, managing systems, and training. This position serves as a member of the facility’s management team and provides coaching and direction to employees at all levels. This position provides oversight to the entire HR team but directly manages the performance and development of the HR Associate-Generalist and two HR Administrators.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide HR support to nearly 1,000 employees

    • Manage the salaried recruiting process by reviewing resumes and applications, conducting phone screens, coordinating interview schedules, and participating in on-site interviews

    • Provide oversight to the hourly recruiting process to ensure compliance and continued process flow

    • Directly manage 3 individuals within the HR team, providing coaching, feedback, development opportunities, and performance reviews

    • Serve as the system expert, answering questions and ensuring compliance (Success Factors, SAP, etc.)

    • Provide coaching, feedback, and direction to employees at all levels as appropriate

    • Complete unemployment claims

    • Manage and develop training programs throughout the plant

    • Prepare professional presentations on a regular basis for plant-wide meetings

    • Complete SAP transactions for salaried employee group

    • Conduct annual wage and benefit survey

    • Lead customer Social Workplace Accountability audits

    • Provide data analysis as needed

    • Conduct employee investigations as needed

    • Acts as a stand in to HR Manager

    • Other duties as assigned
